News UK Cuts Device Estate by 91% and Saves £130,000 Per Year with Toshiba
News UK is the publisher of The Times, The Sun, The TLS, and The Sunday Times, operating across eight sites and employing over 5,000 people across the UK and Ireland. When News UK relocated to new headquarters at The Shard in London, its entire print infrastructure required complete reconfiguration.
The Challenge
The existing print setup had been designed for the company’s previous Wapping location and was unsuitable for The Shard. With over 720 machines across multiple sites serving legal, HR, technology, journalism, and development departments, a comprehensive and complex transformation was required.
The Solution
Toshiba designed a comprehensive MFP fleet with PaperCut secure pull printing integrated with cloud infrastructure. Five permanent on-site engineers provide 7-day coverage from 7am to 7pm, with four-hour standard response times and one-hour response for VIP machines. Staff retrieve documents using building access passes from any networked MFP across all sites.
The Results
- Device estate reduced from 720 machines to 65 (91% reduction)
- £130,000 annual savings in paper and toner alone
- Approximately 30% decrease in overall printing volume
- 5 permanent on-site engineers providing 7-day, 12-hour coverage
- Printing quotas and restricted locations reducing unnecessary output
“We set Toshiba a complex task that required complete reconfiguration of our print setup, and it met all requirements and more.”
Jim Robinson, Technology Shared Services Manager, News UK
