Checking how much toner is left
You can see the remaining toner on the copier's touch panel. From the Home screen, press [Job Status], open the [Toner] tab, and press [Close] when you have finished. Replace a cartridge when the touch panel tells you to.
Steps
- On the Home screen, press [Job Status].
- Press the [Toner] tab. The remaining amount of toner is displayed.
- When you have finished checking, press [Close].
Good to know
- Screens can look slightly different depending on your model, the options fitted and how the copier is set up.
- Wait for the touch panel to ask for a new cartridge before replacing one. See the sections on low-toner and replacement messages.
If the [Toner] tab doesn't appear or the reading looks wrong, contact your service provider with your model name.
What “Toner near empty” means
Not yet. Some toner is still left in the cartridge. Check which colour the panel shows and get the correct replacement cartridge ready. Replace it once the toner has completely run out and the panel shows “Install new *** toner cartridge”.
What to do
- Check which toner the touch panel names. On colour models, *** in the message shows the colour; when more than one is running low they are abbreviated as Y (yellow), M (magenta), C (cyan) and K (black).
- Get the correct replacement cartridge ready for your model and that colour.
- Replace the cartridge when “Install new *** toner cartridge” appears.
On colour models
- If one or more colour toners run out, you can still print in black.
- If the black toner runs out, neither colour nor black printing is possible.
You may not see this warning
This warning may not appear on every machine or under every copying condition. Checking the toner level now and then helps you avoid being caught out.
If you are unsure which cartridge you need, contact your supplier with your model name and the colour shown on the panel.
Toner cartridge replaced before it was empty
A toner cartridge was taken out before its toner was used up. Put the cartridge you removed back in and keep using it until it is empty. If you no longer have that cartridge, contact your service technician.
The message
The panel shows “*** toner cartridge was replaced before empty. Please reinsert cartridge. And use until empty.” On colour models, *** shows the colour concerned.
What to do
- Find the cartridge that was removed.
- Refit it, following the guidance on the touch panel or in your model's manual.
- Keep using it until the copier asks for a new cartridge.
- If you no longer have the removed cartridge, contact your service technician. Don't try to clear the message any other way.
Handling toner cartridges
- Don't touch the cartridge's terminal (its electrical contact). This can stop the copier recognising the cartridge or damage the terminal.
- Never burn a toner cartridge.
- Dispose of used cartridges in line with local regulations.
Never try to repair, take apart or modify the copier yourself. The manufacturer warns that doing so could cause a fire or an electric shock.
If the problem continues, contact your service provider. Tell them your model name and the exact wording of the message on the touch panel, plus any error code shown.
