Paper loaded but the copier still shows a paper warning

Paper warnings for the drawers and the bypass tray have different causes. Find the message you're seeing and follow the matching section.

The copier still says there is no paper

Three different situations look alike. The tray the panel points to may really be empty, the paper may be loaded but not sitting correctly, or the copier may have no paper that suits the original. Read the exact message first, then use the matching checks below.

“Add paper” is displayed

The drawer or bypass tray shown on the touch panel has no paper left. Check which one the panel indicates and load paper there.

Paper is loaded but the no-paper message stays on

  • Take the sheets out of the drawer, line them up neatly and put them back.
  • Move the side and end guides so they match the paper size.
  • Pull the drawer out and remove any misfed sheet caught at the end of it.
  • Make sure there is nothing in the drawer apart from paper.
  • If you are using the optional Large Capacity Feeder, load at least 10 sheets. This minimum applies to the Large Capacity Feeder, not to the standard drawers.

“Change drawer to correct paper size” is displayed

  • No drawer holds paper that suits the original. Load suitable paper in a drawer.
  • If you are copying through the document feeder, the original may have gone in crooked, so its size was read wrongly. Place it again with the feeder's side guides set to the width of the original so it feeds straight.

Never try to repair, take apart or modify the copier yourself. The manufacturer warns that doing so could cause a fire or an electric shock.

If the problem continues, contact your service provider. Tell them your model name and the exact wording of the message on the touch panel, plus any error code shown.

Bypass tray paper size and direction warnings

These messages mean the paper on the bypass tray has misfed, or doesn't match the size or direction the copier expects. If the message mentions the paper size setting, the registered size and the paper loaded must match.

“Check paper size setting on control panel for Bypass. Check the direction or size of the paper.”

  • The paper on the tray differs from the size registered for it, which caused a misfeed. Clearing the misfed sheet alone won't stop the next sheet misfeeding.
  • Clear the misfeed by following the guidance on the touch panel and close all the covers. When “Select handling method of suspended print job.” appears, press [Delete] to cancel the job, then put the paper back on the bypass tray and set its paper size, and try again. If you would rather keep the job, reload the bypass tray with paper that matches the size already set and press [Resume] instead.
  • If you can't change the paper setting, it may be restricted on your machine. Ask whoever manages the copier.

“Misfeed in bypass.”

A sheet on the bypass tray has misfed. Take it out, then put the paper back on the tray.

“Check the direction or size of the paper on the bypass tray and press START”

  • Check that the paper is the right size and is facing the right direction, then reload it.
  • Set the bypass tray's side guides to fit the paper, then press START.

Remove misfed paper only as far as the touch-panel guidance shows. Don't pull hard on trapped paper or go further into the machine than the guidance directs.

Never try to repair, take apart or modify the copier yourself. The manufacturer warns that doing so could cause a fire or an electric shock.

If the problem continues, contact your service provider. Tell them your model name and the exact wording of the message on the touch panel, plus any error code shown.
